How’s That New Year’s Resolution Going?

tg-bicep-curl-ezAs the clock chimed to herald the arrival of a new year, many of us were questioning our vows to do more and in some cases, do less in order to improve our perception of happiness.

It’s nearly half way through the year now, so how’s that going for you?

Were the goals achievable?

Maybe.

If not. Were they realistic?

For many people, the desire to lose weight, get fit, stop smoking, cut down on the booze is all achievable but how we attempt to realise these goals may not be realistic.

I see it all the time, especially at the beginning of the year.

It’s as if we conform to the pressure of making new years’ resolutions only to feel deflated and defeated if, we stumble at the first or second hurdle.

What we need to remember is the goal remains the same, be it weight loss or even making more time to do the things which give us pleasure, seeing friends, family etc.

It’s all about planning and being honest in our goal setting.

We have created a society which expects immediate solutions to any and all problems. That’s not achievable, right?

In terms of excess fat loss or general improvement in our overall health and fitness, set the long term goal but then break it down into smaller goals that can be ‘chipped off’ along the way.

Let’s say you wanted to lose 20kg (assuming you had that to lose).

That would be the long term goal.

You may not be able to stick to a healthy eating plan and train diligently every day until you lose that 20kg.

This may not necessarily be due to self discipline, it may be due to pre existing health conditions, family commitments, work or a host of other reasons.

It really comes down to getting back to basics.

Do the exercises and eat foods that give you pleasure and are beneficial to your health and that will assist you to reach your goal. If you don’t like it, you’re less likely to do it or eat it.

For some people, finding a motivational friend is their only way to get started. While this is good, remember, it’s your goal and the only person who can make it work is you.

Avoid the well meaning friend who knows everything about not much and will turn every session into a competition.

It’s not about them, it’s about you.

Let’s get that new year’s resolution back on track, give me a call and together we can re set those goals, and more importantly, the path to achieving the results you deserve!
